Forward Contract

A forward contract is a private, customized agreement between two parties to buy or sell an asset at a specified price on a future date. Unlike futures, forwards trade over-the-counter (OTC) rather than on an exchange, which means every term — quantity, delivery date, settlement method — can be tailored to the parties’ exact needs. The trade-off for that flexibility is counterparty risk: there’s no clearinghouse guaranteeing performance.

Why Forward Contracts Matter
